At Casa Hidalgo we are committed to producing the best. A dog of sound body and of sound mind as well as correct structure and breed type. Each dog we own or breed must meet our stringent criteria to be used in our program.
All dogs must be judged by independent experts and found to be apt for breeding
All dogs must be of sound mind and stable temperament.
All dogs must be free of symptoms of orthopedic disease.
All dogs are selected for breeding with the goal of breed improvement.
Our goal is to produce well balanced dogs. We know that it takes more to be a "breeder" than putting a male and female together. We strongly believe that there are three distinct qualities that are all equally important.
Type .............. Temperament .................. Health.
We have spent many years studying correct breed type and structure. All our dogs have the necessary breed type, Good expression correct chest, good bone and proper proportions and correct movement. We will not breed any dogs without it.
Our program includes only dogs that have been assessed to have correct breed type
and good conformation. We don't just claim to breed to the Spanish standard ,
we prove it .
The Spanish consider the Spanish Water Dog , a noble dog. One who is very secure and confident in himself. He is calm and even tempered. He is not a dog that goes looking for trouble, but is one that will not run from it. He is still widely popular as a home companion in Spain and is growing in popularity in the rest of the world. The breed should never be unnecessarily aggressive, which shows an unbalanced and unconfident character, but should be alert, watchful and curious.
Most important to us in the area of character is stability and confidence. These are the foundation for everything else. Differences in drives within individuals of the breed occurs, but without the aforementioned, they mean little.
We do not offer you "super dogs" but rather feel, that most Spanish Water Dogs with proper breed character are suitable for
home companions and are trainable for a multitude of tasks. and we do train some of our dogs. We breed for a balanced and confident dog that with proper rearing, will be able to do almost anything that you might ask of him.
In our program, if it's not good enough for our family, it's not good enough for yours.
Our Policies.
QUALITY NOT QUANTITY
We do not breed for over standard sizes, giant heads, rare colors or over aggressive temperament.
If this is what you are looking for, we cannot meet your needs. If however you are looking for a dog that fits the Spanish standard in structure, color and temperament, we may have the right dog for you.
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT.
We do not have puppies available year round for purchase. Producing a quality litter takes time and planning. We do not breed for commercial resale of puppies and generally produce two or three litters in a year period. Pups from our litters are usually reserved far in advance of whelping. advance reservations are recommended.
WE CARE ABOUT OUR DOGS , DO YOU?
Our puppies are sold to approved homes only. Because we care about the future of our puppies we reserve the right to to refuse sale or refund deposits in full for any reason we may deem a home unsuitable for our dogs. We offer lifetime follow-ups on all our puppies. We stay interested in your dog's progress from puppyhood on. Whether you call us to tell us of the big show win your dog had or just the cute little trick you taught your pet ... we want to hear it!!!

We are always happy to talk to you about our dogs, or just the breed in general. If we don't have what you are looking for, we'll try to refer you to someone who may know who does. Our dogs are not our business, they are our passion, We welcome visits to our home.
PETS vs. SHOW.
Even with the most thorough planning and the most perfect parents, all litters have some dogs that will be (or should be) deemed as pet quality. Those who claim that each and every litter they produce are 100% show quality animals are deceiving the public, and are demonstrating that they do not understand the breed or the standard. In our program, "pet quality" animals have breed defects and that we feel are undesirable traits, and those dogs should not be bred so that those traits will not be passed along in the breed. It does not mean the dog is too small, unstable of character or any other disqualifying faults. Even breeding animals are not perfect, but either have very minor faults or are far outweighed by their good traits. Our show/breeding quality puppies are sold with type guarantees.
SALES CONDITIONS.
Our puppy questions to you are to evaluate if we can meet the expectations of potential puppy owners and if they can meet ours. Our contracts are written to protect our dogs. They outline what you can expect from us as a breeder and what we can expect of you as an owner. All dogs are sold with a written contract, all pet puppies are sold with a spay-neuter agreement, all papers will be withheld until buyer presents a certificate of spay or neuter to Casa Hidalgo, they are non-negotiable. All puppies are inoculated and dewormed for their appropriate age. All shipping costs are the responsibility of the purchaser. Puppies are priced on evaluated quality at the time of sale.
